It is a true fact that the British Empire was one of the most successful empire in the world. They almost conquered over 50 percent of our Earth. The process of colonization was rampant and was at its height in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Queen of England was ruling all over the world with her enormous Royal army. Britain also kick started the famous industrial revolution in the world. Above all, this revolution was the latest attempt to manufacture goods at a fast and efficient pace.
England’s citizens also remained faithful to its monarchy and supported the process of colonization. However, majority were unaware of its exploitation and crude behavior over the colonized people. Nations like India and African countries faced the worse form of their exploitation. Many violent uprising took place against the misdeeds of the British empire. But sadly majority of them failed to overthrow the British dominance. Finally, the British empire started to fall and crumble apart into pieces. Why? What led to the catastrophic fall of British Empire?
Reasons behind the fall of the British empire:
· Rising competition:
Despite the famous Industrial revolution, the country was constantly facing huge competitions with USA and Germany. They were going forward in terms of infrastructure and economic power. On the other hand, Britain was starting to lose the competition by a big margin.
· High Maintenance cost:
Britain was facing costly wars in their colonized regions. They were facing daily challenges from the freedom fighters of those nations. Ultimately, made Britain spend more on their army to sustain the dominance over those regions.
·The Great War:
The World War 1, maybe the most crucial reason behind the fall. The war literally crippled Britain’s economy badly. Ultimately, leading to the beginning of the great depression in Britain. The Situations were so worse that they had to borrow from their former colony USA.
· The loss of control:
Britain began to lose control over its main nations; Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa. The natives of these countries got full control over their government and decided to move further apart from their mother country. Ultimately making Britain devoid of the natural resources of these nations.
· The Second World War:
The World War 2 is the biggest reason behind the fall of Britain. The soldiers fought bravely against the authoritarian Nazi Germany. But in the war, England lost a massive amount of man power and most of its economic resources. In fact, majority of the industrial sectors were shut down which led to huge unemployment in the country. On the other hand, the USA had less involvement in the second world war. Later, this made them stand as the next sole superpower in the world.
· Independence movements:
After the creation of UN as a global governing body. The world was facing many independence movements against the British. Mainly, India achieved its independence just after two years of the Second World War. After which majority of the African nations got their independence by the end of the 1980s.
·Decline of public support:
The citizens of Britain lost their faith over its monarchy and the glorious empire. This led to increase in democracy in England. Now people started to question the methods of their government. Ultimately started participation in the decision-making process.
USA benefited enormously from the Second World War by providing supply of ammunition and supply drops to England. On the other hand, Britain lost most of its natural resources and soldiers in maintaining the cost of the war. Therefore, USA was the new superpower in the world.
